Esperanto Island, named after the constructed international language Esperanto, is the largest and northwesternmost island in the Zed group off the north coast of Varna Peninsula on Livingston Island in the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica. L. L. Zamenhof (15 December 1859 – 14 April 1917), whose image appears on coinage of Esperanto, was an ophthalmologist who lived for most of his life in Warsaw. He is best known as the creator of Esperanto, the most widely used constructed international auxiliary language.
