Private Die Proprietary Stamps

The Revenue Act of 1862 was established to meet the demands of the Civil War upon the Treasury.
These stamps were to be affixed to the boxes of Matches, Proprietary Medicines, Perfumery and
Playing Cards. The manufacturers were allowed to design and print their own stamps, allowing
them a discount and great advertising.

The stamp tax was repealed on March 3, 1883, Effective July 1, 1883.
